Flying with carving supplies

From: (RIFamily@cox.net) | Date: 2008-02-26 14:20:09 UTC-05:00
I am flying on Southwest and wondering about carving tools. I know not to pack my stuff in my carry on, but what about in my suitcase? Will they be concerned if they scan my luggage and see my carving stuff, exacto-knife, the gouges.... should I just not take them? They will be with all my other letterboxing things.

I think that if you check it in, you'll be just fine. You can always check
the TSA site for up-to-date restrictions, too.

I just took 5 flights on USAir w/ all my carving supplies packed. I also had
carving blocks in my carryon & had no trouble at all. My family was even
selected at random for the super-intensive search (through every bag
thoroughly, pat-down) & still no concerns about the carving blocks.

Chrispy, I just went over the TSA site (thanks for the suggestion!) and I feel more at ease about what is and what is not allowed. Thanks!

Zess...Thanks! My husband was concerned about carving blocks, so that was very helpful info :)

I flew in December and had a sheet of PZ cut and some gougers in my
checked baggage. I don't think they care all the much what's in
there, since you can't get to it anyway. I definitely wouldn't take
the exactos in your carryon, that's too similar to a box
cutter. But, even the gouges should be okay in the carryon bags.

when my daughter and i flew to the west i had packed all my carving supplies
including the carving blocks. when we arrived at out destination there was
a note in the suitcase saying that they had examined my luggage for security
purposes. they must have been satisfied because nothing else was said or
done. the same thing happened on the return trip. i don't think i would risk
carry on because if they do confiscate it you won't get it back.

I would not keep speedball gouges in your carry on bags. You are
tempting the sceener to determine if they were okay or not.
It would be better to keep them in your stowed bags. There are some
prohibitions on the things you can keep in your stowed bags but pointy
things aren't on the list.

I travel with shotguns, stowed in a locked and secured case, but if I
tried to place live ammo inside the case not in its original container
then it would be against the rules.

Can you ship (mail) them to a destination ahead of time?
That might solve a lot of problems...

Machete's good but you really have to hone the edge for the fine detail work ;)

No concerns at all with checked baggage. I have taken woodworking tools
to my Mom's (including a screw-gun so you know they opened the bag to
see what that was all about). It is carry on baggage where pretty much
the only thing allowed is a disposable razor.

I have flown all over the world with carving stuff. Just check 'em in
your bag. You'll be fine.
